Is there such a thing for Super 8 film? If not, how would the quality be to film a projected image?

I am confused as to why you would need a S8 to S8 print??

Most (all but one) of the stocks are reversal stocks and there for meant for direct projection.

Yes, there are optical printers out there and I have even found S8 contact printers.

    Good Luck

Reversal is also known as 'Chrome....They produce a "positive" image like a slide.

What are your goals and aspirations for S8??

Because there are some things you may need to know before you go running off peeing money in the wind.

    Good Luck

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Look, I'm sorry if I sound uninformed or incompetent. I have been shooting with Super 8 since 2000, and for the most part, my films have just been messing around the house, and they've worked out pretty well under the circumstances. But now, I am working on a documentary concerning local history for a school (the principal wants it to be shown on the office TV screen on a loop). Half of it is on Super 8, half on video, and for the most part, it's turning out fine. But that is more due to luck, maybe even a sliver of instinct than anything else. I know next to nothing about the technical aspects of Super 8-I know how to run it, and when it is too dark to film, and when the cartridge is full. Everything else is guessing, but nonetheless, I have managed to put out some pretty photography (much of it being thanks to my cousin, who is a pro, and gave me some tips) and have learned a lot from my past mistakes, but I am still hardly an expert. I do not have a crew, etc, it is just me with my cameras and a tripod, praying that it works (it does 8 out of 10 times). I would hardly call it peeing money in the wind-Sometimes, experience can teach you a lot more than any books or advice.

I am not saying that you don't know what you are talking about. It has been my experience in the past that when people ask these kinds of questions they also ask if they can take the film out of the cartridge to view it.

If you are shooting K40 or 7240 along with Plus-X and Tri-X then you don't need any sort of printer. What you will need is a Film to Video transfer so that you can cut together with your video footage and make one cohesive work right??

How are you going to edit this?? What format is the video?? It sounds like you should get in touch with MovieStuff if you want a cheap/good transfer. He is easily found. If you want something of true broadcast quality then you will be spending a lot more.

    Good Luck

    <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I understand-Many people don't know the lens from the viewfinder, I'm sure.

I'm using K40 for the Super 8 segments, but I don't want the printer for this project...I have another one in mind when I finish this one that I want to have the printer ready for it. For this current doc, though, I sent the S8 reels to a local place and had them transfered to video, so I am working with those to combine the film and the video. It doesn't have to be of broadcast quality-the main reason I'm filming on Super 8 is because it lets a nostalgic feel onto the images that just can't be copied with any other medium that I've found-the project I'm working on is largely about celebrating the past, especially concerning the local landmark buildings-Even if you had twenty cars from 2003 speeding up and down the road in the middle of the shot, it couldn't ruin the mood set by the film, and these old buildings that have been around for 200 years (as you can tell, I'm passionate, if not obsessive, about it).

Sounds great. I hope it turns out well for you. I was in the market some time ago for an optical printer but I ended up bailing on the whole thing when I realized it just wasn't worth the money. I could pay for blow-ups for less than it would take to get a nice printer set up.

So are you trying to make blow-ups to 16 or 35?? Or are you simply trying to make prints?? If you are making prints a contact printer would be better.

    Good Luck

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I'm trying to make prints (plus, I have several heavily damaged pieces of film around my room that I would like to make into one, clean copy), and I also understand it is possible to make wipes, dissolves, and other effects with one.

    Hi, Will!

You might check my website at

    http://www.moviestuff.tv

I custom build equipment for super 8 and the WorkPrinter-Jr would allow you to transfer to video frame accurately with ultra high quality and it also doubles as an optical printer.
